We spent time talking about the Real Food Wheel (pictured below), and how it embodies the many values people hold which relate to food production. There are four sections on the Wheel (Producers, Earth, Consumers, and Communities) and we shared some of our own stories about which part of the wheel brought us to want to change the food system here at UW.
We then talked about what real food means for us at Husky Real Food Challenge and how food companies try to make consumers think that their products are healthy or ecologically sound through greenwashing. We discussed some of the tactics they use (i.e. getting Non-GMO Project certified when there was never a GMO version available, or labeling products as 'natural' which means close to nothing).
Thanks to every one who came, we had a packed house of lively participants! We hope you all are excited as we are to move forward with this campaign next year! We would also like to thank Mighty-O Donuts, Central Co-op, Molly's (Grown to Eat), and Chipotle for their generous donations to our event!
Students voiced their desire for Real Food by signing on to a letter supporting a Campus Commitment to Real Food! We collected over 250 signatures in 2013-2014. This year we are facilitating student voice about Real Food through our online survey, please check it out by the closing date February 4th, 2015!
